Don't just live in the world

A few weeks ago the kid had a school field trip to a local farm. It was mostly clear while we were visiting but it had been raining, so there was plenty of mud around. At the end of the trip the kid wanted to take a few splashes through one deliciously large mud puddle …

I tried to avoid it, but here we are, the kid’s a walking, talking, pink and purple, frilly stereotype of a little girl. And you know what? I was too. When I actually think back to my little girl day’s, before my all black all the time phase, I was dresses and princesses and pastels.

Parenting in our house is a team sport. Joe and I try to help each other, back each other up. I can’t begin to imagine how hard this would be for me without him. I can’t imagine what single parents deal with. And I’m going to take a moment to acknowledge and honour just how …

When we moved into this house I let the kid help me pick out the paint colour for her room, but that was about it in terms of decorating her room. Now she’s been having trouble sleeping and making strange statements like her stuffed animals don’t want her sleeping in bed with them. There’s always …

The kid started school about four weeks ago now. Half days, four days a week. It’s been really good for her especially as she’s started making friends. Every afternoon she plays with some of her classmates after school. Kids have learned that she’ll be climbing the rocks if they want to find her and play …

The kid is a big fan of stories. We read books, we tell each other stories, sometimes we use our Rory’s Story Cubes to tell each other tall tales. Last week I started reading Fortunately, the Milk to her and she listened intently until about three-quarters of the way through when she started asking me …

She was playing and then there was wailing. Just like that a milestone, something for the baby book: her first bloody knee. She’s gotten minor scrapes before, but this was more blood than she’s even seen escaping from her own body and she was unhappy about that.
