Podcasts:
Wait, wait, don’t tell me: NPR’s weekly news quiz
People look at me funny on the bus because I’m laughing out loud on Monday mornings.
This American Life
More than one person had recommended this to me when I finally started downloading episodes and I really wish I had listened a lot sooner. This show offers a bit of everything – I have laughed, cried, been confused and had things explained to me. It can best be described as wonderful and informative.
The Moth
Storytelling live on stage. I really wish these podcasts were more than five minutes long.
Books:
Anything by Jasper Fforde
His writing is impossible to explain, but I suggest his books to anyone who will listen – I also recommend catching him on book tours, because he is as hilarious in person. My favourite of his books in Something Rotten, which is the fourth of the Thursday Next series.
Harry Potter
As though you haven’t already.
TV:
Bones
I love this show. I think it’s really smartly written and I love the interaction between the characters, who I also love.
Gilmore Girls
Now off the air, but available on DVD. I love re-watching this show and re-connecting with Lorelei and Rory, two of my favourite fictional people.
Grey’s Anatomy
So torrid it’s wonderful.
Anything by Joss Whedon
I started with Buffy when I was 16 and she was 16 and I now own the box sets of Buffy, Angel and Firefly (which was gone before it’s time, much like many of Joss’ characters). If you haven’t watched Firefly, what are you waiting for?
Movies:
Steel Magnolias
I’ve watching this movie probably over 200 times and I still cry every time. In this same theme I have to recommend, as would any woman my age, Dirty Dancing and Grease.
Legally Blonde
It may be a bit silly, but it’s also a great pick me up, and rather inspiring when you really think about it.
Hairspray and Mamma Mia
These are the ultimate put-me-in-a-great-mood movies. I can’t help dancing along.
Live Free or Die Hard
When you want to watch ludicrous violence, this is exactly what you want. Also The Bourne trilogy.
Music:
I always say I don’t really have a favourite band, which is true, my taste varies depending on my mood, but listening to Ben Folds and Jason Mraz almost always puts me in a good one. When I’m in a bad mood there is nothing better than singing along to Linkin Park. I have also been a huge Beatles fan since I was 13, but I don’t think they’re the type of band you really need to tell people about.
I am also a huge fan of Broadway musicals. To date I have seen Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Cats, Miss Saigon, The Who’s Tommy, Wicked, Hairspray and Spamalot. Wicked is far and away my favourite – I recommend reading the book, then seeing the musical. I have seen the show three times and it keeps getting better. It still makes me cry though.
