Sock knitting

When I started knitting, I was confused by double-pointed needles and terrified of socks, but now I understand why the Yarn Harlot loves them so.

I can knit socks on the bus, I can experiment with patterns, and if I screw up it’s not a long way to pull back and start over. Also, sock yarn is lovely, and you usually only need one skein, so it’s not too expensive.

So far I’ve knit 5 full pairs of socks and I’ve got two more socks that are waiting for their pair (which are both underway). Socks were the first thing I knit that had a real pattern in them – and helped me realize that patterns aren’t really all that complicated. Socks helped me get involved with knitters on Ravelry.com when we got together as a group to knit Socks for Seeley (that would be, socks for David Boreanaz’s character on Bones, Seeley Booth, who is known for wearing goofy socks).

I also love socks because the fit is almost always right. I’ve knit socks toe-up and cuff-down, I’ve knit plain socks that show off the yarn and patterned socks that confused the hell out of me.

I look forward to knitting teeny tiny little socks for the baby – mostly because they really won’t take very long to make.
