I’m watching the Golden Globes and laughing uproariously and I’ve been thinking about something. Dame Maggie Smith won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Series for her role as the Dowager Countess in Downton Abbey. I was late to Downton, but love the Dowager Countess exceedingly and the award was most deserved.

At the same time someone on Twitter mentioned having seen Won’t Back Down, staring Maggie Gyllenhaal, which I saw in theatres and enjoyed.

I’m a big fan of both Maggie Smith and Maggie Gyllenhaal, and though neither of them came into my thoughts when we decided to call our daughter Maggie, I’m glad that she’s got some namesakes to look up to.

When I was a kid there were not a lot of Amys around when I was growing up. Now, of course, I’ve got Amy Adams, Amy Poehler, Amy Sedaris, Amy Sherman Pallidino, funny and talented women that I love, that I can be proud to share a name with.
