It is the 21st anniversary of the shootings at École Polytechnique, now known as the Montreal Massacre. Fourteen women were shot because they were going after their dreams. They were reaching a little bit higher than ‘traditional’ female roles.
I don’t remember hearing about the shooting when it happened, but I was only 8 years old and I can fully understand why my mother would keep it from me – my single mother, raising two daughters, working to support our family, much like Marc Lepine’s mother.
I don’t know when the incident – and all the incidents of violence against women that have caught the public’s consciousness – became part of my knowledge base, but it is now and ever will be.
